A useful thing, I’ll tell you, social networks! Not so long ago I talked with an amateur gardener Elena. I found out that she grows the first year of the magnolia Sulange (tulip). The first year - and already blooms! I looked at the photo - blooming magnolia - an exquisite decoration of the garden! A few words were said by Elena about the seedling, but so lovingly, with such admiration, that I became infected ... Now I won’t sleep until I plant such a beautiful woman! I decided to look for information, prepare, find out what kind of plant Magnolia Sulange is - planting, care - complex or not.
Since childhood, I attribute magnolia to plants that grow on the Black Sea coast. “In the land of magnolias the sea splashes ...” is the song of my youth, to which we danced on the open dance floor in the park. Indeed, she is a resident of the southern regions. It grows in all countries with a warm climate. It pleases tourists, locals with its magnificent flowering. Many specially go on vacation to the sea in April-May in order to combine the useful with the beautiful - to see the flowering of magnolias.
But it turns out in order to enjoy the exquisite flowering, it is not necessary to go south. I was surprised to learn that, for example, in the Minsk Botanical Garden in Belarus several years ago, a magnolia garden was founded. So this southern plant can be successfully grown in more northern latitudes.
All over the world it is known not only as a very decorative, but also as a medicinal, even magic tree. There is a legend that if an unmarried girl hugs, touches the trunk of a magnolia, then she will very soon find her narrowed one.
In nurseries or garden centers, you can find a single species, a magnolia variety, with crowns of various shapes, for example, bush or stump, with flowers that differ in shape and color. There are seedlings with white, pink, pale yellow, dark red-purple flowers. There are cup-shaped, saucer-shaped, tulip-shaped or goblet-shaped flowers.
Magnolia Sulange Tulip
Magnolia Sulange (Latin: Magnolia soulangeana) is a shrub or tree. The height of the tulip magnolia depends on the conditions and climate of the area where it grows - it varies from 2-3 to 8 meters. Blossom begins at an early age. It is tolerant to various soil and climatic conditions, can grow even on clay soils, but does not really like calcareous soil. It attracts attention in early spring with spectacular fragrant flowers in the form of a tulip or a glass that blossom on the bushes even before the appearance of the leaves. But even after flowering, the plant looks beautiful with dark green obovate leaves.
Planting and caring for magnolia
I think that you already wanted to have this gorgeous plant in your garden. First, see if you can find a suitable place for him. What should this place be like? It should be covered from the scorching rays of the sun from the south side, protected from the wind. Plant magnolia tulip in partial shade. It is best if your seedling pet is open to the sun in the morning.
How to plant magnolia? Features landing are as follows. Dig a landing pit quite spacious, with a diameter of at least one meter. But before planting, fill it with a pre-prepared soil mixture in which there should be peat or compost, turf or deciduous land, sand. The ratio of the soil mixture is 2: 1: 0.5.
In the care of seedlings, adult plants, there are some features. Do not dig the earth around the trunk or plant something in the near-stem circle, close to its roots. Try to remove weeds with your hands, not with a chopper. Do not dig soil around a tree trunk. Even loosening the soil is not recommended, since the root system of these plants is wide, superficial. For this reason, the soil should always be moist, but sparingly. Seedlings are equally poorly tolerated by stagnant moisture, dryness. Mulch will help keep moisture. Mulching in the spring of the near-stem circle is necessary. As mulch, you can use peat, rotted compost, dry grass.
Magnolias are very fond of not only moist soil, but air saturated with moisture. In summer, with insufficient humidity, they can suffer from dry air. At such times, the leaves of the plants dry on the edge and some may even crumble. From time to time it should be watered by sprinkling on the leaves in the evening or early in the morning.
Regular pruning of the shoots of magnolia tulip is not needed. But to allow some branches to grow inside the crown is not worth it. The tops damaged by frost or dry branches should be removed.
In the Krasnodar Territory, thaws in winter are frequent. This is one of the dangers for Sulange's magnolia. Since flower buds at such a time can start to grow, and sudden frosts will destroy them.
You can propagate with green cuttings or layering. But, I think it is safer to buy a seedling. Experts advise to buy tulip seedlings in early spring. Better if they are already with flowers or buds.
If you provide your pet with suitable conditions, caring care, Magnolia Sulange will undoubtedly delight you every spring with an amazing flowering, delicate aroma.
