The cutting board must be clean and durable. It can perform 2 functions: to be a decorative accessory, to serve as a device for cooking.
Creating a kitchen board is a creative process that does not have a clear algorithm.
What can be a cutting board for products
A plywood board is the easiest and cheapest option. For the manufacture of the product, strong and reliable samples of material are chosen.
Solid wood plank is practical and durable. Inexpensive are made from pine, birch, more hygienic, with a long period of use - from oak, acacia, beech.
By the method of manufacturing boards are:
- Solid carved from solid wood or plywood.
- Glued from individual fragments.
Whole cut easier. Collected are more practical, less prone to deformation, assembled on the basis of a mosaic.
Appearance, shape depend on imagination, technical capabilities. Cutting boards can be:
- One-piece standard.
- Sliding. For installation on a pallet. It is convenient to remove chopped products from them (see photo).
- With a waste compartment that extends like a drawer.
- Corner Suitable for kitchen complexes with a wide working surface.
- On legs
Material selection
If plywood is chosen as the basis, it is worth using a class I canvas with a minimum number of knots and defects. Do not take moisture resistant material: it is saturated with synthetic adhesives.
For the manufacture of using any wood species. Pine, spruce and birch are relatively short-lived. General requirements:
- The wood must be dry throughout.
- The blank must not contain oil stains from technical oil, gasoline and other products: the material has the ability to absorb odors, part of the surface substances.
- It is desirable that the board or piece of plywood be solid, without cracks, loose sections, knots.
The thickness of the workpiece is scheduled based on the purpose of the board. For slicing vegetables, the thickness can be any; for cutting, beating meat, a thick mass is preferable.
Making from whole material: saw cut wood, wide board or plywood sheet
The general manufacturing principle is presented.
Step 1: Design
To prevent errors when cutting a contour, a drawing diagram is used. It can be:
- Draw by hand.
- Print out.
- Do by circling the item. Its shape will become the basis for the board.
A few examples are presented in the photo.
Step 2: preparing the tools
To create a kitchen board you will need:
- circular saw or jigsaw (preferably electric);
- planer and planer or hand tools;
- milling cutter;
- sandpaper or grinder;
- mineral oil for impregnation of the finished product.
Step 3: wood processing
The drawing is transferred to the blank. If the product is rectangular or square, use a ruler. Another way is to cut a contour out of paper and circle it.
Cut with a circular saw if the board is with straight edges, or with an electric jigsaw to create a complex contour.
Slices process faces using:
- file;
- sand paper;
- grinding machine.
When grinding, they remove large chips, small fibers that can get into processed products or under the skin.
Step 4: details
Last of all, make a hole for hanging the board, polish the edges. The surface of the product is decorated with any methods:
- burning out;
- cutting out;
- staining, painting.
For decorative boards, the drawing can be positioned as you like. For chopping, it should be borne in mind that products can get into the embedded pattern. For this reason, the thread should be made shallow. The ornament is allowed only at the edges. It will become a groove for liquids from foods.
Step 5: protection
In order for the product to serve for a long time, without losing its appearance, it must be covered with protective compounds. To do this, use safe solutions, odorless and toxic impurities. Mineral oils are best suited. They are of petroleum origin, but safe, well protect wood. A suitable remedy from a pharmacy is liquid paraffin.
Treatment:
- The board can be impregnated by immersion and staining. In the first case, the product is immersed for a while in a bath of oil, removed, wiped, dried. In the second case, the board is coated with oil with a brush. Apply a thick layer, allow it to soak. The surface should be brushed 2–5 times until the solution is no longer absorbed.
After the first treatment, the fibers remaining after grinding may come out. They are cleaned with sandpaper No. 400-600.
- When the first layer has dried, the product is coated with a mixture of heated oil and beeswax in a 4: 1 ratio. Apply to the surface with a brush, polished with a soft cloth.
How to make a board out of fragments
To make a cutting or decorative board out of fragments, clamps and wood glue must be added to the main tools. The rest of the process is similar.
Step 1: preparing the fragments
Trimming of different tree species looks good together.
The rails are given the same thickness, at least 18 mm. Width can be any. Using the planer, smooth end faces are obtained.
Step 2: Grinding
On the planer, the front sides of the boards are aligned. Do not remove excess: a thin product loses its strength.
Step 3: determine the width
Billets are cut into strips. They can be the same or different widths. The side faces are aligned with a jointer.
Step 4: Build
Fragments are laid out on a flat surface in the order in which they will be glued. For convenience, the workpiece is divided into separate groups. Carpenter glue is applied to the ends of the rails.
The technical composition should be free of toxic impurities.
The groups are fastened with clamps, aligned with slats in the upper and lower planes (see photo).
When the glue dries, the group blanks are sanded and planed to give evenness.
Dividing a large board into narrow fragments allows you to process workpieces on machines. Oriented to the width of the working areas of the equipment for planing.
The processed group blanks are aligned in thickness, glued, lubricating the side ends with glue, and the structure is fixed with clamps.
Step 5: Trimming and Finishing
When the glue dries, the board is cut to the desired size, the surface is polished again. Corners can be rounded off with a milling cutter.
A small groove is cut along the perimeter of the board. There will be accumulated juice resulting from cutting products.
Step 6: oil treatment
The finished product is treated with oil.
In a similar way, a board is made of fragments of any shape.
More ideas
For boards, you can use driftwood, unusual fragments of wood. Sometimes clear forms are avoided, they cost polishing and impregnating the product with protective oil.
In the finished board, you can cut a hole to remove scraps, grind the cut, attach the legs to the plank, and so on.
Care
Wood planks absorb odors, accumulate bacteria. To prevent this from happening, polishing should be carried out, soaking the product with oil at least 3 times a year. Board service life will increase.
